We got to know an Irish ginger who loves singing country songs and drinking chocolate milk. No worries – that’s just how country Artist Canaan Cox introduced himself! He grew up in large family in the town of Hendersonville, North Carolina. He said, “Growing up in a big family I’ve always had an audience. Whether it was quoting Jim Carey movies, playing music or doing card tricks. I always like having eyes on me.”
Within his family he grew up going to ‘Pick – N – Grins’ which was basically going to a relative’s house, on the porch passing instruments around. “Country music always been a part of who I am. I started focusing on my own music near the end of high school. I was cranking up Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts every second I could but grew up loving Joe Diffie.” He admits that he’s inspired by his relationships often throws some pop inspired rhythms and vibes into his music just to add a little bit extra to those country lyrics. He also admits, “I actually sat down the other day to simply write something new, but being a single man, the only tag line I got was ‘Thank God for Tinder” so we’ll see If that’s something worth putting on the album.” We’re sensing a little bit of Brad Paisley’s ‘Online’ right about now!
We got to talk to him about a really unique opportunity he was presented with the opportunity to perform on Carnival Cruise Line we asked him to tell us about the experience. “It was phenomenal! A blessing in disguise really. I don’t think it could get any better than getting paid to see the world and doing something you love. The great thing about it was that I was playing in front of 2,500-3000 new people from all over the world every week! So, a true blessing for building a fan base. Released some new music last year and it was a crazy feeling knowing people in Australia and the Med wanted to PayPal me for autographed Cd’s!”
He acknowledges music is a powerful tool. “I simply want to be in the playlist that makes someone’s day. I want to be the person they listen to when they’re getting over heart break to jamming with the windows down heading to the lake – I think as an artist we have the power to effect people in every aspect of life and I just hope to be able to be on their ‘life’s playlist.’ “
Physical fitness has become a huge part of Canaan’s life. We asked him does he have any regrets living a healthier lifestyle he said, “NO way! I mean, there are times I just want to smash my face into a Five Guys double stack, but abs are made in the kitchen. Diving into fitness has made me the best version of myself mentally and physically. There are so many aspects of the fitness world that transfer into my music career, making goals, focusing on the path, seeing progress, and completing the task. I love challenging myself with fitness and my music so they go hand in hand.”
On a Friday night, you’ll find Canaan being a complete nerd in possibly the best way. “I’m probably meal prepping while dancing to Michael Buble’ in the kitchen. I might check out a premiere of the latest blockbuster with a box of Peanut M&Ms or simply giving into ‘Netflix and chill’ mode.”
His favorite movie series is Pirates of the Caribbean and he loves jamming out to Hanson! If he could work with anyone in the industry it would be Ed Sheeran, “He’s a melodic and lyrical genius. He has a phenomenal way of telling a story through music.”
He considers himself a mix of contemporary and tradition country artist. “There are songs I’ve written that have the classic country vibe, but then my new single ‘Lie’ is a little more modern. I think it’s the greatest thing about country music. There are many levels to it, that as an artist you can play around which each one and still have the country music audience listening.”
On rough days he admits, “My dad is uplifting. He has a great way of reminding me to appreciate what I have and remember it could always be worse.” When he’s got big projects coming He usually calls on his best friend Mike, “He lives in Chicago currently. We’ve been friends since college and even though it’s been 5 years since we talk daily and he knows the dream I’m chasing and how to encourage me to get there.” He also leans on his videographer Dustin. “He used to work in artist development and at times he takes me under his wings with some words of wisdom and plenty of guidance.”
