Interview: Jason Lyle Black – Amazing Pianist @jasonlyleblack

He’s currently working on finishing his Disney piano book that’s being released with Hal Leonard – called ‘Disney Medleys for Piano Solo’ – one of the only books of its kind.  “It’s one of the most fulfilling and fun projects I’ve done.” He’s also been working on a new video for Down Syndrome Awareness. “It was a special project for me.”

We had the opportunity to speak to an amazing pianist Jason Lyle Black – He initially started playing the piano when he was eight years old in his hometown of Livermore, California. “I took lessons all through high school from a wonderful teacher.” He’s played the trumpet and the organ however, the piano is and has always been his main passion in music.

During his teenage years Jason attended a church youth camp where he experienced an amazing talent show. He said, “There were 1,500 people there watching. I wanted to perform the following year, so I came home after the camp and spent three months learning to play ‘The Entertainer’ backwards on the floor.”

The most difficult part of the process was learning the transitions from sitting at the piano to being down on the ground and back again. He said, “That’s what I spent a lot of time learning to do.”

He had the opportunity to perform on the Ellen DeGeneres show. He summed up his experience. “It was a blast! I totally felt like a rock star. And Ellen is awesome. She strikes me as a very genuine person. I really respect her.”

As an entertainer at heart he loves playing what people enjoy.  “The Connection with the audience is my favorite thing about being an artist.”

His favorite composers are Chopin and Rachmaninoff. “So much good music from them. I played a lot of them when I was doing classical music as a teenager. My favorite Rachmaninoff piece is ‘Prelude in G minor.’ My favorite Chopin etude is probably the ‘Etude in E Major’”

Outside of classical music his favorites are Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Imagine Dragons, One Republic, Coldplay, The Killers and he’s a proud soundtrack buff. He said, “I listened to soundtracks for years.”

He’s continuously working on his music career. “It’s extremely demanding to build a music career. I have a great team I work with but I spend a ton of time personally involved in tour planning, sponsor relationship, marketing sessions, brand strategy, etc. I have some great relationships with some amazing partners in the music industry and work hard to keep those alive and well. Then of course – I’m busy doing what everyone sees me doing – Performing, recording, writing and arranging music.”

When he’s not working on music you’ll find him playing racquetball, backpacking in the country, and reading. “I’m a big fan of thriller, suspense, and mystery novels. I’ve been on a biography kick recently as well.” He’s an active Christian and very involved in his church.

He’s currently working on finishing his Disney piano book that’s being released with Hal Leonard – called ‘Disney Medleys for Piano Solo’ – one of the only books of its kind.  “It’s one of the most fulfilling and fun projects I’ve done.”

He’s also been working on a new video for Down Syndrome Awareness. “It was a special project for me.”
